The Martlet, 1948-1973 The Martlet succeeded The Microscope as the student newspaper at Victoria College in 1948, and continued through the transition from the College to the University of Victoria in 1963. It remains the University's principal student newspaper. Its sponsoring bodies have been the Victoria College Alma Mater Society and its successors, the University of Victoria Alma Mater Society, and the University of Victoria Students' Society.
